Q. What are the registration charges for SMS GupShup?

Ans.

Nil - SMS GupShup is a free service and does not charge any fees whatsoever.

Q. Do I, as a group owner or publisher have to bear any SMS costs?

Ans.

There are two ways of sending messages to your group - (i) using a web or GTalk interface from our website http://www.smsgupshup.com and (ii) using your mobile phone that was used to create the group. In case of (i) there are absolutely no charges for sending messages. In case of (ii) the only cost that you pay is to your carrier and for the one message that you send to 5673434. [This cost varies between Re 1.00 to Rs 3.00 depending upon your mobile carrier]. SMS GupShup will forward your message, for FREE, to ALL members of your group irrespective of the number of members. Please write to support@smsgupshup.com, if you need any more clarifications on the above.

Q. How much time does it take to setup an SMS group?

Q. Are the numbers that I add to my group secure will SMS GupShup share them with anyone?

Ans.

We have very high levels of data security and are very sensitive to privacy needs and concerns of our users - we assure you that the list of mobile numbers of the members of your group will not be revealed or shared with any third party under any circumstances. Q. I would like a computer based interface to send SMS messages to my group, is it possible?

Ans.

Yes, you can send messages to your group through our website http://www.smsgupshup.com. Usage of our website is free of cost. You will need a computer with internet connection to send messages to your group.

Q. Can other users join my group and see my messages?

Ans.

GupShup groups, by default, are PUBLIC. This means that the messages are archived and displayed on the website (http://www.smsgupshup.com/groups/<groupname>). Public groups can be joined by anyone. Anyone wishing to join your group can send an sms "JOIN Group Name" to 567678. Subsequent to joining, this person will receive a copy of any message you post.

Q. My SMS messages are private and confidential. I don't want anyone else other than my group members to see my messages.

Ans.

Once you have created your group, you can make it PRIVATE (the default setting upon creation is PUBLIC). For doing this send PRIVATE to 567678. Subsequently, your group and messages will no longer visible on our website http://www.smsgupshup.com. Also, the messages sent by you will be kept strictly confidential as per privacy policy of our company.

Q. Is there a limit to the no. of free messages I can send to my group?

Ans.

For good user experience and to prevent yourself being viewed as SPAM, we limit the number of free messages that can be sent to your group to maximum 15 per hour and 50 per day. Our policy regarding limit to the no. of free messages than can be sent to a group can change from time to time, and can be seen once you are signed into our website http://www.smsgupshup.com.

Q. Does SMS GupShup permit commercial use of its SMS platform?

Ans.

SMS GupShup has been created for individual or personal use for citizens of India, where free SMS groups can be created. Corprates, SMEs and commercial enterprises can write to marketing@smsgupshup.com, for business and commercial applications of SMS GupShup. Registered social organizations like NGOs, Trusts, Schools, etc. can apply for free use of SMS GupShup on support@smsgupshup.com.

Q. Can I invite anyone to become member of my group?

Ans.

No. INVITE command is to be used to invite only those persons who are known to you or are related in some capacity to you, whether personal or professional. Using INVITE command to invite people unknown to you to become members of your group is strictly prohibited. However, any number of people can join a group by using JOIN GroupName command.

Q. My message takes time to reach my group members. Sometimes some of my group members do not receive messages.

Ans.

SMS by its inherent nature of technology has limitations of latency i.e. time taken for delivery and guarantee of delivery of messages, to the intended recipient. This is because SMS GupShup is dependant upon the carrier network. SMS GupShup does not guarantee latency or delivery of messages to the intended recipient. However, SMS GupShup meets the top class industry standards in terms of latency and delivery of messages in IndiAns.

Q. What is the maximum length of a message that I can send through SMS GupShup?

Ans.

SMS by its definition should be a "short message." We recommend that your message length should be ideally less than 100-characters. However, you can send messages longer than 100-characters, and they will be received by members of your group in 2 parts. Further, on high end GSM phones, the 2 message parts will merge into one as a single concatenated message, thus enabling the user to see it as one single message. SMS GupShup reserves the right to truncate your message in case it is unusually long.

Q. I want to set up multiple groups on SMS GupShup, but I have only one mobile number.

Ans.

Currently, you can set up one group per mobile number. This feature has been requested by several users and is under development. Please visit our website www.smsupshup.com for feature updates.

Q. If SMS GupShup does not charge money and allows free SMS messages, how does it make its own revenue?

Ans.

We put a small contextual ad of upto 60 characters after every message. E.g. a typical message received by your group members will read like this, "Will be celebrating my birthday at Mall Road Cafe today at 6pm. All are invited. (Ad) Celebrate happiness with Sweet brand chocolates."We ensure that advertisements which go out to your group members are contextual and relevant to them. No inappropriate advertisements are sent to your group members.
